Discover the Magic of the Twilight Tower Tour at Salisbury Cathedral

As darkness gently descends over Salisbury, a unique and enchanting experience awaits at Salisbury Cathedral: the Twilight Tower Tour. This seasonal event invites visitors to leave the ground behind and climb up through historic spaces to witness the city in a whole new light — quite literally.

Discover the Magic of the Twilight Tower Tour at Salisbury Cathedral

A Nighttime Ascent

  • The tour begins in the late afternoon (around 3:15 pm) during its running season, giving enough time to enter the cathedral in daylight and prepare for the climb.

  • Over 332 steps lead visitors up narrow, winding spiral staircases into the heart of the cathedral’s roof space.

  • At the top, you reach the base of Salisbury’s iconic spire, approximately 68 metres above ground.

What You’ll See

  • Panoramic City Views: From the tower, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking aerial view of Salisbury at dusk — the city’s Christmas lights (if in season) twinkling below.

  • Inside the Cathedral: You’ll also get a rare, uninterrupted view of the cathedral’s interior from above — something you can’t usually see on a regular visit.

  • Medieval Structure: The spire’s interior is supported by medieval wooden scaffolding, which you’ll be able to walk through and observe, giving insight into the craftsmanship and architecture from centuries ago.

  • Roof Spaces: The climb takes you through the cathedral’s ancient roof space, where the guides explain how the building was constructed, maintained, and preserved over time.
